Dia De Los Muertos Skull Cakes
For this recipe I used box cake mix but if you're looking for cake recipes from scratch check out my Chocolate Cake Recipe or my Vanilla Cake Recipe.
I also used a skull cake mold that I purchased from target but here is a link to one that you can get on amazon, Click Here.
Use the video below to help guide you :)
Ingredients:
Cake mix
Glaze:
2 cups powdered sugar
4-6 Tbsp. milk
Buttercream:
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
2-3 Tbsp. milk
food dye
Directions:
Prepare the cake according to the recipe you are following and bake the skulls until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Let the cakes cool completely on a wire rack before glazing/ decorating.
TO make the glaze, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk until it is nice and smooth and there are no lumps.
Once the cakes have cooled, pour the glaze over the cakes and use an offset spatula to help spread it evenly to coat the entire surface. It helps to glaze them on the wire rack with parchment paper underneath for easy cleanup and to allow the excess glaze to drip off.
Let the glaze set on the cakes for 30 minutes to one hour. In the meantime we can prepare the buttercream.
Whisk together the butter and powdered sugar until fully combined. Add the milk one tablespoon at a time until the buttercream is smooth and creamy.
Color the buttercream with whatever colors you want!
Place the buttercream in piping bags. I am using tipless bags but you can use small circle tips as well.
Once the glaze has set, decorate the cakes however you wish. Use the video above to help give you some inspiration :)
Enjoy!!
